Care for Cambodia

Care for Cambodia Projects

In many of the remote villages of Cambodia, the people must walk as many as six miles to a river where they can obtain water. At times, they must go without showering for days due to a lack of water. The villagers have tried to dig wells, but without adequate supplies and concrete, the wells cave in.

These humble people are in desperate need of clean water. That is why Care for Cambodia has chosen to build wells in the poorest villages of Cambodia. Each well will cost approximately $900. Just $900 will provide clean water for 5 to 8 families for years to come.

Because Care for Cambodia desires to help these people become self-sufficient, we will never do anything for them that they can do for themselves. The villagers will take ownership of these wells. Provided the proper equipment, they will dig the first thirty feet of the wells themselves, no easy task! Your donation will be used to hire a professional well-digger who will drill a conventional deep-water well. Next, concrete ring liners will be put in place forming a cistern to hold water, the well will be capped, and a hand pump installed. Through our development partner, "Sustainable Cambodia," the village development committee will contract with a particular family in each village for the maintenance of the well.

Bringing wells to Cambodia will change lives for generations to come. No longer will days be wasted in the long trek to obtain water and more time can be spent working and studying. With clean water at their fingertips, villagers can finally practice good hygiene and avoid the sicknesses that come with drinking the contaminated river water. No longer will one in five children die before the age of six due to water-related illnesses. With wells nearby, during the dry season the villagers can grow crops to feed their families.

Care for Cambodia seeks to improve human living conditions in these villages by giving them means of obtaining clean, safe water.

Current Projects
We are currently drilling wells in 6 villages in the Kravanh district of Pursat. Each village consists of approximately 200 families for a total of 2,000 people. The villages are spread out over sizable geographical area. In a recent trip to this district, we met with the villagers and with local village leaders who expressed an immediate need for clean water. In January this year, our team of local volunteers from Sustainable Cambodia (SC) lived among the villages for 30 days and conducted a thorough needs analysis. It was determined that approximately 70 wells were needed in the area. Care for Cambodia has now begun drilling the first of these wells.
